Spring is upon us, and it’s time to start planning your yard and garden updates! Not only is cleaning up your landscape a great way to get in a little extra movement while spending time outdoors, but it also helps to improve the look of your home significantly. If you’re looking to make some updates this spring, we have some great tips to get you started.
Clean It Up
As soon as the weather begins to warm up, you can get a jump start on cleaning up your yard. After the long winter, there is bound to be plenty of built-up debris including dead leaves, fallen twigs and branches, and maybe even some downed limbs. The first step is to remove all of the organic material and move it to a compost pile or into yard waste bags for pickup. This is also the perfect time to do a full check of your fencing, hardscaping, and additional features to check for damage and make repairs.
Prune and Mulch
Before your plants and trees get too deep into the growing cycle, make sure to prune any that need cutting back for proper growth or shaping. Some plants do better after having been trimmed back. Others may have damaged or diseased sections that should be trimmed to help the plant focus on healthy growth and prevent the spread of disease. Once you’ve pruned, you may be able to use some of the material to help build up the nutrient quality of your mulch. When possible, using an organic mulch made from local materials can be a great way to help improve moisture retention, build nutrients, and keep your beds looking great. Some communities offer mulch made from collected yard waste and downed trees – while this may not be an option for all, it can ensure that your mulch is local and more sustainable.
Plan Your Planting
Once you have the chores out of the way, it’s time to move your focus to the exciting part of landscaping – choosing your plants! Choosing a mix of native, local plants and more exotic ones can help build visual interest, texture, and create a space that will work well throughout the seasons. Keep in mind that using a mix of perennials and annuals can help ensure that you have less work to do next year!
