4 Native Plant Gardening Tasks for October

Birds and butterflies migrate southward, as plant root systems grow and develop in preparation for next season. Prepare for the changing season with tips from American Native Plants.

October is an important month for gardeners that work with native plants. As the temperatures continue to decrease, animals, insects, and plant species prepare for dormancy. Plant Now

This month, gardeners should focus on planting their remaining plants. In most cases, native plants will hold their current size after planting in October but will grow quickly come spring! Assess your garden, and consider transplanting natives that have grown too large for their specific space. Native plants may also be divided depending on the species. If you don’t want to disrupt the soil, pot planting is also acceptable during October! Decorate your entryway with a colorful arrangement of fall natives.

Let It Grow

Plants that impede a path should be trimmed back, but avoid excessively trimming your plants. Native plants provide food and shelter for birds and mammals, which is especially important when the frost comes. A winter garden doesn’t need to be perfect to be beautiful. Native plants transform in color and shape come winter, and the result is naturally breathtaking! Embrace the natural beauty of native plants and enjoy the spoils of a winter garden!

Collect Seeds

Stroll through your garden and collect any fallen seeds that you may find. If your natives bloomed late in the season this year, they may start holding seeds for next year’s growth. Store these seeds in paper bags in a cool, dry place until the spring planting season arrives!

Slow Down

October is a time for gardeners to slow down and assess their garden spaces. Did you try a new approach to gardening this season? Was it successful, or did it fall short of expectation? Record your ideas and accomplishments, and take stock of what you might need for the next planting season. You may wish to start preparations for spring planting now so that you are fully prepared when the winter breaks.
